Move Forward – Even When It Hurts Like a B*tch

I’ve been dealing with bursitis in my right hip since before Thanksgiving. It started off as a curiosity and progressed to being an annoyance until it felt like my leg was having sporadic tantrums.

Yoga with Joelle has been helpful.

Two visits to Urgent Care and one to an orthopedic surgeon have yielded questionable results. Along with the prescriptions for Biofreeze, physical therapy, anti-inflammatories, and pain relievers came, “It’ll take time.”

TIME? UGH. I have to WORK.

So, I’ve been limping and hobbling. Sometimes there’s no pain. Of course, when I step backwards off the curb and catch myself, the pain is ferocious.

As I was tidying up after an appointment, I had time to ponder the pain. David Goggins, Tony Robbins, friends, and previous iterations of myself all weighed in. Goggins is too hardcore for me, but still, I have choices to make.

I wished for a moment that I could just sit in a position that didn’t cause pain.

The thought after that was, “And then what? Not move, not go anywhere? How long could I hold out, and how long would holding still remain a safe option?” Brad Pitt’s line in World War Z came to mind: “Movement is life.”

It was ridiculous, of course, to think I should never move from a comfortable position. That’s an apt metaphor for life. Life spikes the punch with pain. People still gulp it down.

No situation will ever remain comfortable forever. I don’t have plans to embrace and befriend pain, but I won’t let it keep me from living. I won’t let it keep me from moving forward.

My dreams have been materializing right before my eyes, and I have several dreams left to fulfill. That’s my joy. My purpose. The pain is unfortunate, but it won’t determine my luck in life. Plus, even though it feels like FOREVER, it’s temporary.

What are your thoughts on living with pain? Let me know in the comments.
